Walmart Says Protests Made No Impact

  • November 26, 2012

Take that, shop-on-Thanksgiving refuseniks: Retailing leviathan Walmart says protests against its decision to open stores earlier on Thanksgiving Day didn’t make a dent in its sales. The Bentonville, Ark.-based chains says that despite widespread publicity regarding protests and planned walkouts, only 26 protests happened. “We estimate that less than 50 associates participated in the protest nationwide,” it says in its release. “In fact, this year, roughly the same number of associates missed their scheduled shift as last year.”

The company also says it had its strongest Black Friday events ever, serving some 22 million shoppers. During the high traffic period from 8 p.m. through midnight on Thursday, Walmart says it processed nearly 10 million register transactions.
