Phishing Attacks Up 19 Percent in June

Unique "phishing" attacks were up 19 percent in June compared to the previous month, according to the new "Phishing Attack Trends Report" for June 2004 released by The Anti-Phishing Working Group (APWG). Attacks in June totaled 1,422, averaging 47.4 per day--up from 38.6 in May. Citibank was the most heavily targeted organization--it was hit 492 times in June. Phishing attacks refer to false emails and Web sites that appear to be sent or hosted by legitimate companies that are employed to fool recipients into divulging personal information. APWG is affiliated with Internet messaging software provider Tumbleweed Communications Corp.
