1.7 Million New U.S. Broadband Subscribers in Q2

The twenty largest cable and DSL providers added a combined net total of 1.7 million U.S. subscribers in Q2 2004, the fewest net additions of any quarter in the past year, as reported by Leichtman Research Group, Inc. These top twenty cable and DSL providers accounted for over 28.6 million high-speed Internet subscribers during the second quarter, or approximately 95 percent of the market. Top cable broadband providers maintain a 6.4 million subscriber advantage over DSL, and have a 61 percent share of the total broadband market. Top DSL providers added almost 900,000 subscribers, or 52 percent of net broadband additions. According to Bruce Leichtman, president and principal analyst for Leichtman Research Group, Inc., the top cable and DSL providers have combined to add over eight million net new broadband subscribers this year.
