Rovio Launching Cartoon Channel

“Angry Birds” creator Rovio Entertainment on Monday announced plans to introduce its first animated series across smartphones, tablets, TV networks and streaming media players. Starting the weekend of March 16-17, Angry Birds Toons will debut via a dedicated video channel available in Rovio games, on-demand video platforms and select TV networks globally.

Rovio has partnered with Comcast Corp. to launch an Angry Birds Toons channel in the U.S. through the cable operator’s Xfinity on-demand channel, Web site and mobile app. It will go live globally on Samsung Smart TVs at launch, followed by Roku boxes and other platforms.

It will also premiere on TV channels worldwide, including FOX8 in Australia, JEI TV in Korea, ANTV in Indonesia, Cartoon Network in India, MTV3 Juniori and MTV3 in Finland, the Children's Channel in Israel, and 1+1 networks in Ukraine.

To watch the series through Rovio’s own Toons channel, fans simply download the latest update to any Angry Birds game, which will unlock the new channel button in the game home screen on March 17th. The 52-episode series will release a new installment each week across TV networks, mobile and on-demand services.

The cartoon venture is only the latest expansion of the Angry Birds franchise that also includes nine hit games, a YouTube channel with nearly 1 billion video views, a successful plush toy line, and an Angry Birds movie slated for a 2016 release.

Last month, the company also signaled plans ramp up advertising efforts with the expansion of its global advertising team through hires from companies including Apple, Millennial Media and inMobi. Rovio to date has worked with brands including McDonald’s Warner Bros. and Campbell’s in connection with Angry Birds.
