NY Yankees Score Highest Media Value For Baseball

NY-Yankees-Stadium-AWhat is the biggest baseball brand? Look for the pinstripes among players in New York's Bronx. The New York Yankees generated nearly $500 million in media value.

The Bronx Bombers produced almost three times the value of second-place Philadelphia Phillies, who registered $160 million. Another New York baseball team was next -- the Mets, at $107 million, per social media researcher General Sentiment's 2013 MLB Media Valuation Report, which looked at media value from March 26, 2013 to March 25, 2013.

General Sentiment says its "impact media value" is derived from Internet "sentiment" -- whether "good" or bad" -- in terms of discussion, as well as brand exposure.

The St. Louis Cardinals were in fourth place ($94 million), followed by the San Francisco Giants ($91 million). The rest of the top 10 included: Baltimore Orioles ($69.9 million); Atlanta Braves ($69.3 million); Washington Nationals ($61.6 million); Colorado Rockies ($52.9 million); and Cincinnati Reds ($51.4 million).

The lowest media brand value generated for Major League baseball teams: Texas Rangers ($8.2 million); Los Angeles Angels ($6.9 million); Chicago Cubs ($5.8 million); San Diego Padres ($4.8 million); and Cleveland Indians ($4.1 million).

Can we really use this data to determine the biggest brand among clubs in Major League Baseball? My vote is no. Who is using this study and for what purpose?
