Scammers Take Advantage Of Boston Tragedy

Less than an hour after news about the tragic Boston Marathon bombings began to unfold, a Twitter message from “@_BostonMarathon” was already being retweeted: “For every retweet we receive we will donate $1.00 to the #BostonMarathon victims #PrayForBoston.” Fortunately, some eagle-eyed Twitter users began calling this out as a fake – in addition to the tweet being an offshoot of an old Internet hoax, the official @BostonMarathon Twitter handle doesn’t have an underscore between “@” and “Boston.” The fake account had a profile photo that was close to the real photo, but also had few followers and a line that read, “The unofficial Twitter account of the Boston Marathon.”
