Comedy Central Debuts App As Stand-Up Network

Comedy Central has launched an app that functions as sort of a stand-up network. The free “CC: Stand-Up” has Axe as an initial sponsor.

More than 700 comedians offer content as the network mined its vault to assemble the content. Included is “Six Degrees of Stand-Up,” which is aimed at helping users discover comedians with its “recommendation algorithm."

The network offered the example of comedian Pete Holmes. Users viewing his work will find “Six Degrees” pointing them toward “similar sensibilities (alternative comedy), topics (animals) and relationships (love of Ryan Gosling).

The iPhone and iPad app includes curated playlists -- one of which is backed by Axe -- and opportunities to share video on social media platforms.

The network plans to promote the app across its network, SiriusXM radio channel and at live events. The network recently said it would sponsor three live shows in New York this summer.

Comedy Central Vice President of Digital Marketing and Fan Engagement Don Steele spoke recently at a MediaPost OMMA event and emphasized how important social media is to the network’s marketing efforts. Any passalong videos from “CC: Stand-Up” would dovetail with that.

“We’re not just a passive thing you sit on a couch and watch … so this relationship we have with people in social is really how we fuel this conversation and how we fuel our brand,” Steele said.
