TiVo Says It Tops Two Million Subscribers

  • September 24, 2004
Apparently meeting its promise to double its one million subscribers within two years, TiVo--the digital video recording company--is now claiming it has more than two million viewers signed onto its service.

The company said it reached the plateau during the first week of September.

Subscribers sign up for TiVo's service after buying a digital TV set-top box at a consumer electronics store or from satellite provider DirecTV. The company has come under fire, and its stock has slumped this year amid concerns that its growth prospects are limited--particularly with DirecTV expected next year to offer subscribers an alternate DVR provider.

However, TiVo has stuck to its aggressive growth outlook for three million users by January, and has earmarked an extra $50 million to spend on wooing customers this year.
