NBCU Leads 'TV Everywhere' Efforts

Among all TV content companies, NBCUniversal leads when it comes to second-screen “TV Everywhere” efforts, providing more channels than any other premium or basic cable TV group.

A report from market researcher IHS, says NBC provides 15 video-on demand (VOD) channels to “TV Everywhere” initiatives. TV Everywhere allows pay-TV subscribers -- which represent 90% of U.S. homes -- access to second-screen devices. NBCUniversal also allows five “live streaming” channels for TV Everywhere. Time Warner is next, offering nine VOD channels and three live channels.

In total, IHS, as of October 2013, says there are 73 video-on-demand (VOD) channels and 31 live streaming channels available for those TV Everywhere efforts.

News Corp. offers six VOD channels; five live streaming; Viacom is also at six VOD channels, and no live streaming channels; Disney is at five VOD and five live; Scripps Networks have five VOD channels; A&E, four VOD channels; and the NFL has three VOD and three live streaming channels.

Liberty Media offers three VOD channels; Time Warner Cable, two VOD and two live; CBS and Cablevision each have one VOD and one live streaming channel for TV Everywhere; and Crown Media, Epix, Sony and Univision each provide one VOD channel.

In the second quarter of 2013, IHS estimates the pay-TV business lost 352,000 subscribers, in part due to seasonal shifts but also because of some cord-cutting activity.

IHS says TV Everywhere can be one effort to stem these losses of subscribers -- those TV consumers who are increasingly looking to trim down or eliminate high costs. Many of those seek over-the-top TV services like Netflix.
