WPP Lights Mobile Fuse, Acquires Bottle Rocket

WPP this morning announced a deal to acquire Bottle Rocket, a fast-growing mobile shop that handles a wide range of media-centric clients, including NPR, Scripps Networks, NBC News, National Geographic and NBC Universal. Terms were not disclosed, but WPP said the agency had unaudited revenue of $17 million over the past 12 months and currently employs 170 people.

Founded in 2008, the Dallas-based shop will become a part of WPP's network of mobile services and will work horizontally with other WPP operating companies.

The deal follows WPP's August acquisition of a minority stake in fellow Texan, Austin-based Mutual Mobile, and is part of the holding companies overall push to accelerate its mobile marketing and development services.

Bottle Rocket's core is mobile app development for brands across the leading mobile operating systems, including IOS and Android.

Smart move on the part of WPP as mobile advertising is expected to reach $24.5 billion worldwide by 2016.
