Cablevision Revs Inch Up, Subscribers Dip

longislandCablevision Systems Corp. revenue inched up 1.8% to $1.6 billion.

Cablevision had a net loss of 37,000 customers to land at 2.831 million; high-speed data customers were down 13,000 to 2.774 million; and voice customers were off 18,000 to 2.272 million. Total customers -- those who receive at least one of Cablevision’s products -- were down 29,000 to 3.195 million.

For its video business -- which pulls in the bulk of its business -- the loss was worse than in the previous quarter, when it had a net loss of 11,000. What worries some analysts is that these declines continue, while it looks to business expansion -- growing its network of homes by 6% -- as competition from Verizon and Time Warner Cable becomes more heated.

Better news came from the money it gets from video customers -- up 5.4%, or $8.38, to $164.61 -- and cable advertising, which grew nearly 9% during the period.

Cablevision reversed a $3.8 million net loss from a year ago to a net profit of $294.6 million. Financial results include an acquisition of Bresnan Broadband Holdings. Net profit results were better than analysts expected, and revenues were in line with what analysts projected.

Midday trading had Cablevision up 1.5% to $15.87.
