Yahoo! To Roll Out Desktop Search

  • December 12, 2004
Late last week, Yahoo! Inc. said it will begin testing a new desktop search engine in early January, with the hope of extending its search engine's reach, thereby contributing added, incremental paid search revenue. Yahoo!'s desktop search will use licensed technology from X1 Technologies Inc. Like Google's Desktop Search, users will be able to search e-mail, photo, music, PDF-format documents, and other files that exist on their hard drives. The online media giant expects to roll out several updates to the new desktop service, which will eventually allow users to search content from chat groups, address books, and instant messaging archives. Google, the Internet's largest and most popular search engine, unveiled its Desktop Search Service in October. -- Ross Fadner
