Netflix Moves 'Turbo Fast,' Debuts First Original Kids Series

Netflix is debuting is first original series for kids. "Turbo Fast," an animated comedy from DreamWorks that kicks off Dec. 24 at 12:01 a.m. The five-episode series, which continues the "Turbo" movie story line, has a release strategy that mirrors traditional TV.

Unlike the binge-watching option of Emmy-winning "House of Cards," "Turbo Fast" will have 26 episodes shown in 2014.

Ted Sarandos, Netflix chief content officer explained the scheduling: “With new episodes on their way in the coming months, kids will have something to look forward to all year.”

The “Turbo Fast” series focuses on the high-energy adventures of Turbo, a super-fast garden snail and his stunt team pals: Whiplash, Burn, Smoove Move, White Shadow, Skidmark and Chet. Reid Scott of "Veep" will voice the title character.

The movie has grossed $280 million worldwide.

Netflix has arrangements with various studios, but the DreamWorks Animation deal this summer was its biggest for original content. The studio will develop 300+ hours of programming based on DWA characters. DWA feature films, beginning with The Croods, also will be available on the streaming service in the U.S. and Latin America starting next year.

DreamWorks Animation CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg called Netflix a "fantastic partner whose vision has given our characters an amazing platform to be enjoyed by families around the world."

Netflix, a leading Internet television network, has more than 40 million members in 40+ countries watching over 1 billion hours of TV shows and movies per month.
