If you
like your football gossip delivered with a sweaty, manic edge you’re in luck: Rob Ford, the scandal-prone mayor of Toronto, is coming to the U.S. airwaves to talk football courtesy of WFJK,
106.7 The Fan, in Washington, D.C.
Ford will talk about his NFL picks in a potential weekly segment, with the first guest spot scheduled to air at 8:40 a.m. on Thursday morning.
Ford has earned wide notoriety for various transgressions while mayor of Canada’s largest city. Admitting to smoking crack in a self-described “drunken stupor,”
associating with gang members and knocking over a female member of city council finally prompted the Toronto City Council to take the unprecedented step of stripping him of his powers.
While Ford’s off-the-cuff statements and larger-than-life personality may now be political liabilities, they have also raised his profile and made him an object of popular fascination.
No stranger to talk radio, he hosted a show on Toronto’s Newstalk 1010 called “The City.” (A TV reality show called “Ford Nation” was canceled after one month).
Ford has demonstrated his credentials as a sports fan on a number of occasions, even wearing an NFL jersey to defend himself in front of the City Council.
WFJK’s offer was apparently
prompted by Ford’s appearance at a Buffalo Bills-Atlanta Falcons game in Toronto over the weekend.
WFJK hinted at a possible return engagement and even a weekly Rob Ford feature
if all goes well: “For now, a weekly segment has not been approved. But if all goes well Thursday, an agreement on a recurring segment could be reached. One thing is certain:
tomorrow’s Rob Ford segment should be must-listen radio.&rdquo
