TNT Grabs 'The Hobbit, The Desolation of Smaug' TV Rights

Time Warner Inc.'s Turner Broadcasting System has nabbed the network television premiere rights to the current movie hit "The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug," planned for a 2016 premiere, reports Multichannel News. So far, the film, based on J.R.R. Tolkien's "The Hobbit" has hit $127M in the U.S. The first film in the trilogy, "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey," debuts on TNT in 2015. The cabler  first entered Middle Earth with its network television premiere of "The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring" in 2004.
