WCVB is planning marathon coverage of the first anniversary of the 2013 Boston Marathon bombings on April 15.
As part of its extensive coverage, the ABC affiliate will be running a telethon
to raise money for One Fund Boston, which has been providing assistance to the victims of the horrific attacks. The telethon, which will run from 6:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., will be broadcast from Towne
Stove & Spirits on Boylston Street, just a block from where the bombs were detonated last year.
AT&T will provide technical support for the event. AT&T customers can make $10
donations by texting BOSTON to 80108. The donations will then be added to their monthly bill.
WCVB plans to cut in and out of the telethon as part of its day-long coverage of the
anniversary, which begins at 4:30 a.m. Coverage will include updates on the survivors and heroes of the tragedy, live commentary from former Boston Mayor Tom Menino, and broadcasts of tributes by the
City of Boston and the Marathon's sponsor, the Boston Athletic Association.
In addition, WCVB's news magazine
Chronicle will be broadcasting live from the telethon as
part of their hour-long marathon special.
Chronicle will air from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
WCVB has already won two awards for its coverage of the 2013
tragedy,
the National Association of Broadcasters' "Service to the Community" Award and a Gracie Award for its special "Boston Strong Reunited."
The 2014 Boston Marathon
will be run on Patriots' Day, April 21.
