American media giant Viacom has promised to spend more on quality programming at Channel 5, which it bought yesterday from Northern & Shell for GBP450m. Philippe Dauman, the chief executive of
Viacom -- which broadcasts MTV, Comedy Central and Nickelodeon in the UK -- said the purchase will give it a bigger audience in Britain for its own programming and will provide an opportunity for it
to invest in new British productions.
