Last year, YouTube made $3.5 billion for Google, according to a report (behind a paywall) in The Information. If accurate, that would have made the video unit profitable, but still a big
disappointment for analysts -- many of whom thought YouTube brought in between $5 billion to $5.6 billion in revenue, last year. As GigaOm notes, “It’s clear that the video service has
become a key focus for future growth beyond the company’s core AdSense and display ad business.”
