Independent digital agency Essence has formed a new global management team consisting of Joseph Tomasulo, global chief financial officer, Mark Nancarrow, global chief operating officer, and Claire St Louis, global chief people officer. 

The new positions follow the appointment in May of Christian Juhl to the global CEO role. “Essence has grown tenfold in the last four years, but to continue at that clip will be no small feat and will take a world-class executive team,” Juhl said of his new global managers.   

In his new position, Tomasulo is responsible for all financial and legal matters for Essence globally. Previously, he was the global CFO for the digital agencies within Publicis Groupe, including DigitasLBi and Razorfish. There, he was responsible for the financial affairs and business operations for more than $1 billion of combined revenue. 

Earlier, Tomasulo oversaw mergers and acquisitions as well as real estate for Publicis Groupe in North America. He has been involved in more than 100 acquisitions during his 25-year career. 

Nancarrow joined Essence as CFO in 2010, and in 2013, took on additional duties as COO. In his new role, he will be accountable for the agency’s delivery globally. Previously, the 30-year business and finance vet served at a number of companies including financial firms HSBC and Egg, based in the UK and which he ran as CEO. 

St Louis has been a partner at Essence since 2013 focusing on the company’s human resources efforts. Earlier she was a consultant to the company. 

Tomasulo will be based in Essence’s New York Office, while both Nancarrow and St Louis will be in London. Juhl remains based in San Francisco. Other offices include Seattle, Singapore and Tokyo. 

The agency claims to manage over $650 million in digital media buys, deploying campaigns in over 70 markets. Clients include Google, eBay, Expedia and Barclays. The agency now has more than 450 employees worldwide.
