Twitter Ups Stewart To VP, North America Media Partnership

Reinforcing its domestic media business, Twitter has promoted Kristine Stewart to the position of vice president of North America Media Partnerships.

Formerly head of media partnerships for Canada, Stewart will report to Katie Jacobs Stanton, who was only recently named Twitter’s first global media chief, in July.

Regarding Stewart’s expanded responsibilities, Stanton said she was “thrilled, thrilled, thrilled,” in a tweet posted Thursday night.

Formerly vice president of international market development at the microblogging giant, Stanton effectively filled in for Chloe Sladden, who resigned as head of Twitter’s media unit, in June.

The appointment followed a number of c-suite changes at Twitter. Along with Sladden, COO Ali Rowghani resigned earlier this year. As part of a broader effort to improve its standing on Wall Street, former Goldman Sachs managing director Anthony Noto also replaced Mike Gupta as CFO, this year.

Despite surging ad revenue and better-than-expect user growth, some Twitter watchers continue to criticize the company’s management. This week, venture capitalist Peter Thiel made headlines after calling Twitter “a horribly mismanaged company” -- and with “probably a lot of pot-smoking going on there,” no less.

“It's such a solid franchise it may even work with all that,” the early Facebook investor said during a televised “Squawk Box” interview, this week.

Among other media efforts, Twitter continues to encourage TV networks and studios to promote their shows among its community. To that end, the company just released an internal study, which found that networks and studios that live-tweet during programming can significantly increase followers and mentions on Twitter.

Before joining Twitter in mid-2013, Stewart served as executive vice president for English services at CBC-Radio Canada. Stanton herself joined Twitter in 2010 from the U.S. Department of State, where she led its mobile donation campaign for Haiti, among other projects.
