Newcastle Intros Scotch Ale

Actor Wil Wheaton is featured in two humorous videos promoting Newcastle’s “Collaboration Edition” Scotch Ale.

Wheaton — who is much smoother in his delivery than legendary pitchman Orson Welles (who hawked California “champagne” or Ringo Starr, who shilled for wine coolers in the ‘80s) — is drolly funny in both renditions.

In the first, he talks about the how the beer came to be while superimposed copy adds to his copy. In the second, there are two images of Wil — the boom operator is supposed to be his brother — who gives him a hard time throughout the video.

The brand-new “Collaboration Edition” series of beers are limited-edition brews made in conjunction with some of Europe’s oldest breweries. Newcastle Scotch Ale is made with the masters at Edinburgh’s Caledonian Brewery. Scotch Ale will be available through February 2015.

The Newcastle Scotch Ale collaboration is a limited-time offering that represents the best of English and Scottish brewing: a rich, full-flavored and fulfilling Scottish ale with toffee notes at 6.4 percent ABV and 40 IBUs. Scotch Ale is a bold yet balanced beer that will please lifelong Newcastle fans as well as more adventurous drinkers.

The videos aim to make beer connoisseurship accessible and fun for drinks lovers of all stripes, says Brett Steen, brand manager for Newcastle Brown Ale.

“One of our dreams is to get rid of the ‘intimidation’ factor that prevents so many people from foregoing boring ‘yellow beer’ and enjoying more interesting brews,” Steen says in a release. “Wil is an inviting and knowledgeable guy, and we’re stoked that he’s taking this herculean effort of humor and wisdom onto himself so we don’t have to.”

Newcastle is also promoting the collaboration series, which will roll out throughout 2015 and include new beers made in partnership with some of Europe’s oldest breweries, on Facebook and Twitter.
