L7 Time-Shifted TV Rises, 'Gotham' Skyrockets

TV program viewing through seven days of time-shifting continues to climb.

For the most recent reporting week ending November 30, Fox’s “Gotham” added a Nielsen 1.5 rating points among 18-49 viewers to its 2.3 live-plus-same day program rating -- a 65% boost, totaling a 3.8 rating through seven days of time-shifting and live viewing. This makes “Gotham” the highest-rated show among 18-49 viewers after seven days.

Three other dramas also picked up big viewership numbers among 18-49 viewers — each adding 1.2 rating points:  CBS’ “NCIS”, totaling 3.7 (48% gain); NBC’s “Grimm,” with a 2.4 total (100%); and NBC’s “Chicago Fire,” up to 2.8 (75%).

Only one comedy appeared in the top 10 of big gainers of time-shifted viewing through seven days: Fox’s “New Girl” tacked on a 1.1 rating to get to a 2.4 L7 rating, a climb of 85%.

NBC’s “The Voice,” the highest-rated show when it comes to live-plus-same day ratings — a 2.6 rating among 18-49 viewers) — added 0.6 of a rating point through seven days to get to 3.3, for a 26% gain.

So far this season, the biggest average percentage gainers when it comes to seven days of time-shifted program viewing are CBS’ “Elementary” 100% (a 2.2 total); NBC’s “Parenthood”, 92% (a 2.3 total); CW’s “Vampire Diaries”, 88% (a 1.5 rating); ABC’s “Revenge” 83%, (a 2.2 rating); and CW’s “The Originals”, 83%, (a 1.1 rating).

The next five: CW’s “The Hundred”, 80% (1.8 rating); Fox’ “New Girl”, 77% (2.3 rating); NBC’s “Grimm”, 77% (2.3 rating); and ABC’s “Marvel Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.”, 76% (3.0 rating).

    While there is no doubt that delayed viewing is on the rise where younger audiences of primetime broadcast network shows are concerned, we should also note that this represents only a relatively small snapshot of the total TV viewing experience. Delayed viewing is relatively uncommon in other dayparts and among people over 50, as well as for many cable shows. So we are really talking about less than 10% of all TV viewing that is being affected, not all of it.
