CES And The Short Chevy Intro

What a difference a year can make in the world of CES and at least one connected car.

At last year’s CES opening eve, Chevrolet wowed media from around the world with its totally networked Corvette on stage along with two other cars, all featuring in-dash mobile apps with live demos of how GM expects consumers will use mobile technology inside the vehicles.

Top execs from AT&T, GM and OnStar were on hand for casual conversations with all in attendance as media members took turns sitting in the cars and testing the networked features.

This year, Chevy showed up again -- but if anyone had any great anticipation of the company matching last year’s event they were likely to be sorely disappointed.

In a short presentation by Chevy Global Marketing Chief Tim Mahoney, he talked about wanting to drive a Volt when he first joined the company and then had a giant curtain on stage raised to showcase the coming re-done Chevy Volt.

The curtain stayed up maybe a minute and since I was standing right in front of it snapped a photo before the curtain was then lowed back down, covering the car.

Leaving the stage, I asked Mahoney if that was it.

I mean, would there be any showings of in-car networking, new apps, now announcements, like the joint venture with AT&T at last year’s event or the announcement last year that all future Chevys would be shipped with networking technology, or anything like that?

No, that was it, said Mahoney.

The journalists, bloggers, photographers and videographers that packed the room from all over the world, then got to listen to a guitarist/singer, courtesy of Chevy.
