Woody Allen Will Script, Direct Series For Amazon Prime

Two days after its “Transparent” won a Golden Globe as best comedy, Amazon Studios announced that Woody Allen will write and direct a half-hour series for Amazon Prime, but didn’t add much information beyond that.

"Woody Allen is a visionary creator who has made some of the greatest films of all-time, and it's an honor to be working with him on his first television series," said Roy Price, vice president of Amazon Studios, in statement.

Allen’s packaged statement included his signature self-effacing style: "I don't know how I got into this. I have no ideas and I'm not sure where to begin. My guess is that Roy Price will regret this."

Although Allen is best known for his films, early in his career, Allen was a gag writer, most notably for “The Tonight Show.” As his stand-up career took off, he was also a frequent guest on late-night talk shows.

Amazon doesn’t disclose much information about what its Allen series will be about, which is consistent with what's known about Allen's film projects most of the time. He has received a full season order for the half-hour series.

Allen has been nominated for Oscars two dozen times and and won four -- three times for his screenplays and once for directing. His best-known films include “Annie Hall” and “Manhattan.”

Although many of his films are cinema valentines to New York City, he has filmed several moving overseas lately, and Amazon may use his popularity to help expand its international presence. It says the series will be available in the U.S., UK and Germany.
