Saks, Disney Enlist Shoe Designers For Real-Life Cinderellas

As the release of next month’s “Cinderella” gets closer, Disney Consumer Products is pairing up with Saks Fifth Avenue and nine swanky shoe designers, creating sexy glass slippers that are more Carrie Bradshaw than Brothers Grimm.

The designers, who include Jimmy Choo, Salvatore Ferragamo and Stuart Weitzman, have each created their own version of the magical footwear, which poor Ella leaves behind at the ball when the clock strikes midnight. (The designs sparkle with crystals from Swarovski, which made the glass slipper featured in the movie.)

It’s a shoe that fits Saks perfectly: In addition to selling them in its footwear collection on 10022-SHOE, Saks’ dedicated shoe floor ZIP code, it intends to feature them in vignettes in center store windows in both New York City and Beverly Hills, Calif., along with costumes and props from the film. And the film’s stars, Lily James and Richard Madden, are also scheduled to appear on Saks’ March Magalog, due out early next month.

“The tale of Cinderella is rich in romance and tradition, thus the collaboration between Saks Fifth Avenue and Disney felt natural,” says Mark Briggs, Saks CMO, in its announcement. “Saks aims to bring back the magic in retail, and what better way to celebrate than enchanting our customers with dazzling footwear fit to make any dream come true?”

While Saks will sell the shoes in the U.S., some of the designers plan to sell them in their own stores, and they are also expected to be available at luxury stores around the world, including Harrods in London, Galeries Lafayette in Paris; Excelsior Milano in Milan; Tsum in Moscow, and Isetan Shinjuku in Tokyo.

James, who is best known as the wild Rose on “Downton Abbey,” plays Ella, while Cate Blanchett is cast as the evil stepmom and Helena Bonham Carter is fairy godmother. (See the trailer for the Disney film here.)
