Yet Another Agency Didn't Read the Memo on Disastrous Productivity Levels In Open Office Spaces

Since you all work in marketing and advertising, you are very familiar with the open office space concept. In fact, you can't really walk into any ad agency or marketing firm without feeling like you're on a football field with desks. Yes, the open office concept is quite prevalent these days. Except it has been found to be far less productive than old school office space.

But that minor detail hasn't stopped the agency world from racing ahead with the next greatest open office concept. The latest agency touting its foray into Open Office Space Land is Myrtle Beach-based The Brandon Agency. In an effort to continue "to build a hip, fun collaborative agency that delivers measurable results for clients," the agency announced the completion of "an open work space environment to enhance creativity, inspiration, and collaboration."

Of the new space, The Brandon Agency COO Scott Brandon said: “I truly believe that creativity comes from within. With our cool new space, we’ve given our team the space that matches their talents -- a place with energy that brings out the best in people.”

The work space includes ten common areas, "state-of-the-art technology" and an open concept floor plan that encourages discussion and "group ideation." The release boasts that "the space is a dynamic working environment oozing imagination."

I think it depends on what kind of agency you are. I think in a lot of agencies the open concept can be distracting. At Genuine, we're a digital agency and collaboration means larger teams and a more varied set of people than at most shops. Offices would slow that down.

Both spaces have their pluses and minuses, as long as you recognize that not all people work the same. I would have a slight problem working in a space that oozes, however.
