In a rare bit of positive news for the Internet sector, online advertising in the United Kingdom, Europe's biggest ad market, grew 7.1 percent in 2001, a report by the Interactive Advertising Bureau (IAB) said on Wednesday. The report said advertisers spent 165.7 million pounds ($241.7 million) to promote their brands on UK Web sites in 2001. In 2000, British sites brought in 154.7 million pounds in ad revenue. But while Internet ad spending was up for the full year in Britain, it tailed off considerably in the second half of 2001, traditionally the best-performing period for media outlets. In the second half of 2001, online ad spending fell by 17 percent from 90.2 million pounds to 75.5 million pounds, the study said.
