An employee of The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) accidentally sent and email with the personal information of 524 individuals without first encrypting the
information. The email includes patient names, addresses, Medicaid recipient ID numbers, genders, ethnicity, race, insurance information, provider names, Social Security
numbers and dates of birth. In response to the gaffe, the organization has installed software that will intercept emails with personal data and block them from being sent until the data is
encrypted.
