Isis Pharmaceuticals has been named after the Egyptian goddess of sanguinity for more than 25 years. Needless to say, Isis suggests a lot of things these days, but health isn't one of them. Thus, the company, which makes drugs to treat cancer, heart disease and other maladies, is now Ionis Pharmaceuticals. “We decided to change our company name because, when people see or hear our name, we want them to think about the life-saving medicines we are developing,” Lynne Parshall, the company's chief operating officer said, in a statement.
