'Barron's' Redesigned iOS App Includes Key Search Feature

Barron’s has launched a redesigned iOS app and promised an Android version will be released soon. The financial newspaper is owned by Dow Jones and is now under its new publishing unit, Dow Jones Media Group.

The new app for Barron’s boasts a more “streamlined, cleaner design and navigation.”

“We’ve given the app, first launched in 2010, a renovation aimed at making it faster, more stable and easier to use,” wrote Edwin A. Finn Jr., president and editor of Barron’s, in a Letter From The Editor.

The app update includes a new “much-requested” search feature that will allow readers to find content in archived issues, he added.

Stock quotes are also included within articles so readers can get data on companies with a tap.

Finn wrote that they plan to add market data and Watchlist features within the app in the next few months.

Android users can look out for an upcoming update to the Android app “within the next week,” he added.

Barron’s, like many other financial newspapers, has a paywall that requires readers to buy a subscription in order to access the content. Print subscribers can log into their accounts to gain free access.

The redesigned app was originally released on January 11, but this update fixes a crash bug for those still using iOS 8.

Barron's - along with Web sites MarketWatch, Mansion Global, Financial News and Newsmart - are all part of the new Dow Jones Media Group, led by publisher Almar Latour, who was previously executive editor for The Wall Street Journal.

Latour told Publishers Daily that each brand remains separate under Dow Jones Media Group, which will give them the attention and “intense focus… that these brands have not had yet.”

Latour also said the dedication of the media group to these Dow Jones brands will provide the opportunity for “a real deep commitment to digital and new media.”

According to an internal memo from Dow Jones CEO Will Lewis, the aim of the publishing unit is to “replicate the successful Barron’s formula.”
