'The Atlantic,' 'New York Magazine' Win Top Ellie Awards

The Atlantic was named Magazine of the Year in the 2016 National Magazine Awards for Print and Digital Media. The Ellie Awards are given by the American Society of Magazine Editors (ASME) and were presented Monday night at the Grand Hyatt New York.
The Atlantic was praised for “advancing the national debate on issues of critical importance.”

Gayle Goodson Butler, editor in chief of Better Homes and Gardens, was given the Magazine Editors’ Hall of Fame Award.

New York was the only publication to receive more than one award. The title won Ellies for General Excellence, Magazine Section, Website and Multimedia. It was the 11th year in a row that New York was awarded at least one Ellie.

The Hollywood Reporter won its General Excellence category for special interest magazines for the second year in a row. Vice News was honored in the same category for the second consecutive year, winning the 2016 Video award for “Selfie Soldiers: Russia’s Army Check In to Ukraine.” Last year, Vice News received the Ellie for “The Islamic State.”

Eight brands won an Ellie for the first time this year: BuzzFeed News, The California Sunday Magazine, Eater, FamilyFun, The INtercept, Lucky Peach, Matter and Politico.

“Tonight’s winners are shaping the multiplatform future of magazine media,” stated Sid Holt, chief executive of ASME. Vanity Fair’s “Call Me Caitlyn” cover featuring Caitlyn Jenner won Cover of the Year in the ASME Best Cover Contest 2016. The results were announced Tuesday, the second day of the AMMC.

ESPN Magazine’s “Body Issue” cover, which had six different versions, one of which featured heptathlete Chantae McMillan, won the Readers’ Choice Award.

The Ellies are named for the Alexander Calder stabile sculpture, given to each winner and resembling an elephant. This year marked the 50th anniversary of the awards, which were first presented in 1966.

The Ellie Awards annual dinner ceremony was held in conjunction with the American Magazine Media Conference (AMMC). More than 500 magazine editors and publishers attended the dinner. 67 media organizations were honored as finalists in 21 categories, but only 18 publications earned an award.
