NFL, Motorola, And America Online Launch Wireless Super Bowl

While NFL teams have been using wireless communication on the playing field for a decade--trivia for Sunday's game: the coach-to-quarterback communication system was introduced in 1994--this year's Super Bowl in Jacksonville will be the first truly wireless Super Bowl for the fans, courtesy of Motorola and America Online.

The game airs Sunday at 6:30 on Fox.

As part of their cross-marketing partnership for Super Bowl XXXIX, the sort of wireless offerings the companies have in mind include "Live Super Bowl MVP Balloting"--where fans at home and at Alltell Stadium in Jacksonville, Fla. can vote for their favorite player, thanks in part to applications produced by THQ.

Also, Super Bowl commercial voting via AOL will provide wireless voting for the AOL Super Sunday Ad Poll to complement the online Super Bowl voting application within the AOL mobile service--via Motorola--and on AOL.com. In addition to voting for their favorite ads, fans can view every commercial that aired during the game through the AOL service or on the Web at AOL.com. Last year, fans streamed commercials 9.2 million times and cast more than 3.5 million votes. In 2003, the commercials were streamed more than 5.6 million times in 36 hours.

Other features include ringtones featuring the voices of various players from the New England Patriots and Philadelphia Eagles, as well as downloadable games and live scores and statistics.
