Google Local Makes The Home Page

  • February 4, 2005
Google Thursday announced the addition of their local business search function, Google Local, to the Google Home Page. The service was previously only available at local.google.com, or under the "more" link on the search pages. According to Google, the local search function received as much traffic as other, front-page linked functions, prompting Google brass to give searchers easy access with a front-page link.

The function, which is still in beta testing, searches for local businesses in a given city or ZIP-code, and provides a map that marks the location of the results on each search page. The service was launched in March, and was upgraded in September to include the mapping capabilities and a new interface.
