The 272 Million Email Address Leaked on Dark Web Are Fake

The 272 million email credentials that were discovered for sale on the dark web last week are 99.9 percent invalid. Hold Security discovered the list for sale for less than $1, but has since tested the data and found that the overwhelming majority of those credentials are fake. "The database is most likely a compilation of a few old data dumps collected by hacking Web services where people used their email address to register," Mail.ru explained. "Therefore, it is fair to assume that the sole purpose of issuing the report was to create media hype and draw the public attention to Holden’s cybersecurity business."
