'Walking Dead,' 'Empire' Most Tweeted Series Of TV Season

Many of TV’s top Nielsen viewed TV shows were also the most tweeted series -- with AMC’s “The Walking Dead” and Fox’ “Empire” getting top results.

For the TV season, running from August 31, 2015 through May 29, 2016, “Walking Dead” averaged 435,000 tweets per episode, according to Nielsen Twitter. “Empire” came in at 387,000, followed by HBO’s “Game of Thrones” at 252,000. ABC’s “The Bachelor” (248,000) and NBC’s “The Voice” (176,000) completed the top five.

Cable shows also made the top 10 list: USA’s “WWE Monday Night Raw” was next at 169,000. FX's “American Horror Story: Hotel” came in at 165,000, followed by MTV’s “Teen Wolf” with 145,000 and VH1’s “Love & Hip Hop” at 134,000.

ABC’s “Scandal” (133,000,) was in 10th place for average tweets per episode.

CBS/ESPN Deportes’ “Super Bowl 50” pulled in the most tweets for any single TV telecast of the year, with 16.9 million. The Super Bowl was easily the most-viewed U.S. show, as it has been for decades, with a Nielsen 112 million viewers.

Award shows posted high tweet results: CBS’ “Grammy Awards” (7.6 million); ABC’s “The Oscars” (7.2 million); ABC’s “2015 American Music Awards” (5.3 million); and TBS’ “iHeartRadio Music Awards” (3.3. million).

The big political season also scored well. CNN Democratic Debate on October 13, 2015 pulled in 2.8 million tweets (584,000 authors); with CNN’s Republican Debate on September 16, 2015, getting 2.5 million (490,000 authors).
