MPA Report: Magazine Brands' Social Media On Growth Trajectory

MPA – The Association of Magazine Media has released a social media report for magazine media for the first half of 2016. It reveals that likes and followers were up 7% from the first quarter, with the industry gaining over 1 billion likes and followers in total.

Instagram is the fastest-growing of the social media platforms for magazine media. For the first time, Instagram surpassed Twitter in total likes and followers among magazine brands participating in the Social Media Report. Instagram had 21 million new followers for magazine brands in the first half of 2016.

Facebook continues to be the most successful social media platform for magazines, with more than twice as many likes than Twitter followers of the same brands. Facebook added 23 million new page likes for brands.

Out of 37 media companies, National Geographic Magazine came out on top with the highest number of total likes and followers across platforms, with 85 million as of June 2016.

ESPN The Magazine took the second slot, with 57.8 million likes and followers. Rounding out the top five were National Geographic (54 million), Vogue (35 million) and The Economist (32.5 million), which replaced Time at no. 5, bumping the magazine down to 6th place from the first quarter.

According to data from Shareablee, magazines generate more social engagement than TV, radio, online media and newspapers. The top 10 magazines' reach nearly doubled the audience of the top 10 TV shows.

“Magazine media produces more social actions than any other medium,” Linda Thomas Brooks, president and CEO of MPA, said in April. “That demonstrates just how engaged consumers are with these brands.”
