Amazon Adds Free Mags To Prime

Amazon is sweetening the deal for members of its Amazon Prime service with free access to a variety of digital content, including popular magazines, as well as books, comics, and short-form literary works from its Kindle Singles selection.

The new feature, called Prime Reading, is essentially a stripped-down version of Amazon’s more complete Kindle Unlimited subscription service, which costs $9.99 per month on top of the usual Amazon Prime subscription fee of $99 per year.

Prime Reading may be intended, at least in part, as a way to drum up interest in Kindle Unlimited’s more extensive offerings, as well as boost demand for Kindle devices themselves.

The list of magazines with free digital versions available on Prime Reading includes People, Sports Illustrated, Bon Appétit, National Geographic Traveler, HGTV Magazine, Popular Mechanics, Golf Digest and Runner’s World, among others.

Prime members can also read over 1,000 books and comics, with different titles rotating through over time to keep the selection up to date. (That also means that most content is only available for a limited period.)

Prime Reading is accessible on Kindle devices and the Amazon Fire tablet, as well as Android and iOS devices with the Kindle app downloaded. The service includes most of the main Kindle features like Page Flip, Popular Highlights, X-Ray, and integration of Goodreads, a social reading and rating network.

Prime Reading is just the latest in a series of new offerings from Amazon’s subscription service, which offers access to a number of different types of content through features like Prime Music, Prime Video, Prime Photos, Twitch Prime (for games) and Audible Channels (for audio books).

Prime members also get free delivery and first access to Amazon’s Lightning Deals.
