Conde Nast Poaches AOL's Norton, Named Chief Business Officer

Conde Nast has hired top AOL global sales executive Jim Norton to the newly created position of chief business officer and president of revenue.

Norton is leaving his position as global head of media sales at AOL, where he spent seven years. He played a key role in AOL’s partnership with Microsoft Advertising, as well as the sale of AOL to Verizon and the recently announced plan to acquire Yahoo.

Norton also serves as the vice chairman of the Interactive Advertising Bureau (IAB). He will move up to chairman in 2017.

AOL has yet to name his replacement.

In his new role, effective Oct. 17, Norton will oversee all revenue operations for Conde Nast’s 22 brands.

Conde Nast president and CEO Bob Sauerberg stated that organizing all revenue operations under Norton will allow the company to “quickly respond to the dynamic marketplace and our clients’ needs.”

“My goal is revenue growth,” Sauerberg told The Wall Street Journal, adding that the company wants to “develop our digital assets and expand into other areas through acquisition. Jim Norton has access to new advertisers who need to know us better, and he’s a digital native. We want to be seen as the industry’s key digital premium player.”

Conde Nast aims to ramp up its digital efforts to reach more readers and advertisers through mobile and video. According to the WSJ, the company will focus on cross-portfolio selling. Conde Nast sales executives will pitch brands on buying ad space across its magazines.

Two Condé Nast execs are leaving the company as Norton enters: Jill Bright, who oversaw brand development, and Edward Menicheschi, CMO and president of the Condé Nast Media Group, which includes the branded content studio 23 Stories.

Both employees had been with the company for over 20 years.
