Bustle Names Wagenheim CRO, Looks To Diversify Revenue

Former Fusion SVP of brand partnerships, Jason Wagenheim, has left to become chief revenue officer at Bustle. Wagenheim starts his new job on Nov. 7, after just seven months at Fusion.

“It was a super-hard decision to leave Fusion,” Wagenheim told WWD. “They are on an incredible roll. Going to Bustle puts me back in the middle of where I grew up in this business. Bustle is on fire.”

The 3-year-old millennial-focused women’s site may triple its revenue this year to $30 million, according to a Monday report from The Wall Street Journal. ComScore data shows the site had 28.6 million unique visitors in the U.S. in September.

Wagenheim said his responsibility as head of revenue at Bustle will be to target revenue opportunities for mobile, digital, social media and live events, as well as “broaden the categories that we compete in and to figure out new ways to diversify revenue… I’ll take everything I learned at Condé Nast in the fashion, beauty and retail space and translate it to tent poles [for growth].”

Before he was hired by Fusion in April, Wagenheim worked for Condé Nast and Time Inc. He has served as publisher for Teen Vogue, Glamour and Entertainment Weekly.

Bustle has been on a hiring spree after it raised $11.5 million in a funding round led by Saban Capital Group in March. The company has since increased from 100 to 170 employees, with investments in sales and technology.

Earlier this week, Bustle hired Kate Robinson, a nine-year Viacom veteran, as SVP of business development.

Wagenheim told WWD that his decision was not influenced by Univision, Fusion’s parent company, and its decision to combine Fusion’s business with the recently acquired Gizmodo Group, comprising properties formerly known as Gawker Media.
