Election 2016: Key Newspapers Drop Paywall

For today’s presidential election, numerous publishers are dropping their paywalls. Offering free digital access during major events has the potential to boost online ad revenue and attract new subscribers.

The New York Times, for example, has suspended its paywall for 72 hours, from Monday, November 7 until midnight Wednesday, November 9, to allow uninhibited digital access to its content.

"Independent journalism is crucial to democracy, and I believe there is no better time to show readers the type of original journalism The New York Times creates every day,” stated Arthur Sulzberger Jr., chairman of The New York Times Co. and publisher of NYT.

All publications under the USA Today Network have also lifted their paywalls. Tomorrow and Thursday, USA Today will print an extra section devoted to election coverage.

Sites like The Atlantic have been taken over today by a continuous live election blog, anchored by its "Politics & Policy "team reporting from Washington, D.C.

However, there is a notable exception. The Wall Street Journal has a different take on the election.

"Our coverage of this historic election is a perfect example of the kind of trusted news, insight and analysis our members pay for," a WSJ spokeswoman told Politico’s Morning Media.
