Global Pay TV Subscribers See Slight Uptick

Some 100 of the top global pay television services' subscribers rose slightly by 3.45 million in the third-quarter reporting period, according to London-based Informitv’s Multiscreen Index.

Overall estimates now have worldwide pay TV subscribers at between 800 million and 1 billion.

Asia-Pacific had a strong increase of 2.54 million subscribers in the quarter, while Europe, the Middle East and Africa grew 650,000.

North American, Central American and South American markets had a collective quarterly increase of 250,000 subscribers -- although the U.S. lost TV subscribers in the quarter -- down 73,000 over the quarter, and 357,700 year over year.

The company said 57 of the 100 services reported net subscriber gains in the third quarter, compared to 59 in the same period in 2015.

The United States lost 73,000 subscribers. But looking more broadly at North America, Central America and South America, there was a collective quarterly increase of 250,000 subscribers.

Asia-Pacific remains a major long-term gainer -- adding 14.4 million TV subscribers in a 12 month period.

The Multiscreen Index consists of 100 pay TV services collectively accounting for around 420 million worldwide subscribers.
