Hackers have succeeded in eroding public trust by leaking the emails of public officials even though most of the emails did not show any misbehavior on the part of officials. Climate scientists were
attacked when their emails were taken out of context to suggest that they created fake conspiracies about climate change. Leaked emails also likely caused Hillary Clinton the presidential election.
