A new survey says 74% of U.S. consumers believe producing or sharing pirated video content is illegal -- and 69% of those respondents think streaming or downloading pirated content is illegal.
But research also said nearly one-third (32%) of respondents said they watch pirated content. When consumers were told that pirated video content can result in studios losing money, 39% of consumers said this knowledge had no effect on the amount of illegal content they watch.
Only 19% of respondents said the financial damage caused by piracy would stop them from watching pirated content altogether.
Other results reveal that 24% of consumers are most interested in pirated TV series. An additional 24% are most interested in pirated movies that are currently showing in theaters.
Research was conducted online from December 29, 2016 to January 3, 2017 by YouGov, with a total sample size was 1,190 U.S. adults (aged 18 years and older.
The survey was produced by YouGov for digital security platform Irdeto.
