KFC Brings Together Dueling Colonels

KFC is bringing another colonel on board for its first Super Bowl spot.

Billy Zane plays the new Georgia Gold Colonel, whose skin and hair is painted with gold paint to make him appear appropriately gold plated. He competes with Rob Riggle, the Kentucky Buckets Colonel in a round of teasers from Wieden + Kennedy.

Zane, an actor and producer, is best known for playing Caledon Hockley Rose’s fiancee before Leonardo DiCaprio swept her off her feet in “Titanic.” His other roles include Hughie in the thriller “Dead Calm,” Kit Walker/The Phantom in “The Phantom” and for his TV role as John Wheel in “Twin Peaks.”

Riggle, an actor and comedian best known as a correspondent on “The Daily Show” with Jon Stewart, began appearing as Colonel Sanders last fall following actor George Hamilton, who made his debut as KFC’s Extra Crispy Colonel last summer to promote its extra crispy chicken recipe. Other colonels have included comedians Norm McDonald and Darrell Hammond. Zane is promoting KFC’s Georgia Gold Honey Mustard BBQ variety.

In one 35-second teaser, Zane arm wrestles with Riggle. In another, the two have a never-ending (47 seconds) battle of rock-paper-scissors. A third 26-second teaser shows the two colonels awkwardly hanging out together before Riggle barks at Zane: “You’re not the real Colonel.”

The 15-second Super Bowl spot, already up on YouTube, will appear in the fourth quarter and marks the first time two celebrity colonels have appeared on screen together since KFC launched the rotating Colonels advertising strategy in 2015.

KFC also began airing a 90-second spot on WWE Network’s Royal Rumble broadcast. In the spot, WWE superstars Enzo and Cass promote KFC’s new line of Georgia Gold chicken. WWE worked in collaboration with KFC to produce the spot, which will air in WWE Network broadcasts until WrestleMania on April 2.
