Nintendo Goes Big For Switch Intro

With its new Switch console coming out next month, Nintendo is going big to build the hype, airing its first-ever Super Bowl ad this Sunday.

The ad, which will run in the fourth quarter of the game, shows of the new console’s versatility and its flagship “Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild” game. Featuring a new song by the band Imagine Dragons, the ad shows people playing the new console in a variety of ways, as television-connected console, as a handheld device, and as a stand-alone party device.

The ad begins by showing a man waking up to play the Zelda game on a handheld tablet, intercut with others playing games in other ways (such as a father and son competing in a Wii-like boxing match or Millennials playing a quick-draw party game), before showing him drop the tablet into a holder to continue playing the game on his television without interruption.

A 30-second version of the spot will run during the fourth quarter of the game, while a 90-second extended version has been made available online. Marketing plans beyond the Super Bowl for the Switch console could not immediately be determined.

“The most anticipated video game system and video game of the year will be seen on the biggest stage of the year,” said Nicolas Chavez, Nintendo of America’s vice president of marketing, in a statement. “Nintendo Switch will change how, when and where people play games. It’s only fitting that we’re changing how, when and where we advertise those games.”

The Switch console and the “Legend of Zelda” game will go on sale to the public on March 3.
