Uniqlo, Swarovski Join 'Beauty and The Beast' Fan Club

While Disney films usually create a licensing boom, this week’s opening of Beauty and the Beast is spinning a wider net, with both Uniqlo and Swarovski offering grown-up tie-ins.

The live-action remake of Disney’s 1991 animated classic is already setting ticket-sale records, in no small part due to millions of nostalgic Millennials who spent their formative years humming “Be Our Guest.” Uniqlo, the Japanese fast-fashion retailer best known for minimalist basics, is onto them and says the new collection is meant to help women channel their inner Belle.

Using the pattern of Belle’s “everyday dress,” it has created a line that includes a blouse, long shirt, tunic, and T-shirt. “The collection was designed for the modern woman, retaining the film’s romantic mood while also expressing Belle’s wisdom and elegance throughout the story,” it says in its announcement. There are 25 items for women, and 8 for girls. “Everyone needs a place to dream,” it’s proclaiming on its website, with the collection offering “magic for all.”

And Swarovski is also launching a line aimed at grown-up princesses. The Austrian crystal company adds sparkle throughout the film. It added more than 2,100 crystals to the iconic yellow dress actress Emma Watson wears, and supplied crystals and vintage jewelry for other costumes. It also made the bell jar used in the film.

Built on the magical rose that is central to the story’s theme, it says the collection addresses “inner beauty and female empowerment.” It includes

necklaces, bracelets, rings and earrings, with prices ranging from $59 for a hairpin to $549 for a choker to $14,000 for limited-edition figurines.

The film has been leading the way in social media buzz, according to comScore, and has already broken the advanced ticket sales record set by Finding Dory and Captain America: Civil War. (Both are also Disney films and both grossed more than $1 billion in 2016.)

Trailers for the film, which opens March 17, have already been viewed by millions.
