Wal-Mart Nixes Online DVDs, Taps Netflix

  • May 20, 2005
Wal-Mart Stores Inc. Thursday said it was closing its online DVD rental business, and that it would now refer customers to Netflix Inc. Existing Wal-Mart DVD renters will be able to continue their subscriptions with Netflix through next year, while those who do not sign up with Netflix by June 17 will lose their service. As quid pro quo, Netflix plans to urge its 3 million subscribers to buy DVDs from Wal-Mart's Web site, Walmart.com. About 70 percent of Wal-Mart's DVD rental customers pay $12.97 per month to check out up to two titles at a time, and $17.36 per month for three titles. The majority of Netflix customers pay $17.99 per month for three titles at a time. -- Gavin O'Malley
