Worldwide Online Video Consumption, Advertising To Rise By One-Fifth

A new report forecasts that online video viewing around the world will rise by one-fifth in 2017.

Zenith’s Online Video Forecasts 2017 report estimates that consumers will spend an average of 47.4 minutes a day viewing online video this year -- up from 39.6 minutes in 2016. The report attributes the lift to the abundance of video content on platforms including Hulu, Netflix, YouTube, and Facebook.

The report also projects that mobile video viewing will increase by 35% to 28.8 minutes per day in 2017, and will rise by 25% in 2018 and 29% in 2019. Viewing on PCs, laptops, and smart TVs is projected to increase by 2% to 20.3 minutes.

In addition, the report estimates that online video advertising will grow 23% to $27.2 billion. However, annual growth peaked at 37% in 2014. And by 2019, online video will account for 31% of total expenditures on digital display advertising, up from 28% in 2017, and 21% in 2012.

Tobi, I must assume that the 47 minutes per day on digital video "viewing" that you are reporting refers not to the average person---like in the total population---butonly  to those who watch such videos on a typical day----which is not by any means the total consumer population. Can you clarify, please?

Ed, I don't know if this is the "average" consumer or someone who binges. "Global consumers will spend an average of 47.4 minutes a day viewing videos online this year, up from 39.6 minutes in 2016," https://www.zenithmedia.com/mobile-devices-lift-online-video-viewing-20-2017/
