'Outside,' Atlantic.com Promotes Execs, Editors

Active lifestyle magazine Outside is promoting Sam Moulton to VP director of marketing and Cecelia Magnani to VP digital sales and strategy.

Moulton has served for two years as marketing director, where he oversaw 360-degree integrated programs across print, digital, social and podcast platforms. Previously executive editor, Moulton helped oversee the redesign and relaunch of Outside’s website in 2011.

Moulton’s first interned with Outside in 1999 at the magazine’s Santa Fe headquarters, where he is based. Scott Parmelee, executive vice president and Chief Revenue Officer of Outside, stated Moulton has "seamlessly navigated this new world where idea generation and smart edit/content integration are critical."

Magnani has been at Outside for seven years, first as online sales manager and later as digital sales director. Under her leadership, the magazine saw a 500% growth. She is based in Outside’s New York City office.

Separately, The Atlantic has promoted Matt Thompson to executive editor and Adrienne LaFrance to editor of TheAtlantic.com.

Thompson was previously deputy editor of the site. Now, he will oversee all cross-platform projects, as well as continue to lead projects with a greater focus on cross-platform collaboration.

Thompson will also manage The Atlantic's audio platform and co-host the “Radio Atlantic” podcast debuting later this week, alongside The Atlantic’s editor-in-chief Jeffrey Goldberg and contributing editor Alex Wagner.

LaFrance will manage day-to-day editorial operations of TheAtlantic.com and oversee its reporting team across 10 news desks. She succeeds the site’s previous editor J.J. Gould. Joining the magazine in 2014, she served as a staff writer and editor, covering technology, politics and the media.

These promotions come at a time of record audience growth at The Atlantic. Goldberg reports audiences have grown 36% in the first half of 2017, compared to the same period last year, with a record 42.3 million monthly unique visitors in May.
