Charter Sees Continuing Cable Subscriber Declines, Video Revenues Flat

Charter Communications witnessed cable video subscriber declines of 90,000 in the second quarter -- with internet service subscribers climbing by more than twice that level.

The company’s video subscribers stand at 16.6 million. The decline was an improvement from the 152,000 loss of video subscribers in the second quarter of 2016.

Better news for Charter came with the addition of 231,000 internet subscribers, which now total 22 million.

Overall, Charter’s revenue from its residential video business was flat -- at $4.1 billion, with residential internet business up 12% to $3.5 billion. Adding in deals from Time Warner Cable and Bright House Networks showed a 58% increase for its video business and a 80% growth for its internet business.

Charter’s landline phone business grew 1.2% to 10.4 million subscribers, with revenue down 11% to $650 million. Adding in business from its Time Warner Cable and Bright House Networks showed 53% more revenue.

Charter’s local cable system advertising revenue dropped 6% to $381 million.

The company's overall second-quarter revenue grew 4% to $10.4 billion -- on a pro forma basis, without its acquisition of Time Warner Cable. Adding in that transaction, Charter’s revenues grew 68%.

On May 18, 2016, Charter completed its acquisitions of Time Warner Cable and Bright House Networks.
